Sara provides advice on all aspects of privacy and freedom of information law to clients in the business, regulatory, non-profit, education and health sectors. Her privacy work includes privacy compliance assessments, compliance program development and implementation, strategic advice during critical privacy incidents, drafting and negotiating information-sharing and information-protection agreements, and ongoing advice and support. Her freedom of information work includes acting for individuals and organizations in making or responding to access to information requests, including in administrative proceedings at the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for BC. Sara is committed to public education around privacy and freedom of information issues. Her work in this area includes creating two public education websites about privacy rights in BC, co-authoring a leading reference work on privacy law and policy, entitled Privacy Law in the Private Sector: An Annotation of the Legislation in Canada, and presentations to various groups interested in privacy rights and obligations in BC.
Sara has unique insight into the issues facing organizations when addressing privacy requirements because she also served for over four years as a privacy officer for one of the largest law firms in Canada. Since January 2010 Sara has been Associate Counsel at Alliance Lex.
Sara currently serves as Co-Chair of the Freedom of Information and Privacy Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association-BC Branch. She is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals and serves as a member of the IAPP Canadian Advisory Board. She also sits on the Board of Directors of the South Coast BC Transportation Authority Police Service. She is an honorary permanent member of the BC Freedom of Information and Privacy Association. Sara speaks frequently at conferences and in the media on privacy issues.
